Quarantine has gotten the best of us.  We’ve either all wanted to go somewhere at least once.  Some of us might have even mustered up the courage and actually gone on a vacation.

I can say that for us, we have not gotten on a plane (yet) BUT we have gone a few road trips! We followed all COVID-19 necessary protocols and took precautions when we stayed in a few hotels and home rentals. Our favorite social distancing getaway was when we went camping!

However, this blog post isn’t about those trips. This blog post is actually for those folks who want to getaway but can’t or for those who want to turn your normal weekend into a unique adventure!

We’re going to help you have fun AT HOME! 🙂

Here is what we did:

I was able to plan was actually a little surprise “flight” for Gabe to Mexico and I’m going to detail below how you can plan something like this too!

The Trip:

I made “boarding passes” with some scrap paper and gave them to him as soon as he got out of the shower.  I even grabbed his passport and made him go through security before he could go downstairs!  Needless to say, he couldn’t stop laughing at me!

I’ve also included a simple template below that you can print and fill out yourself to make your own boarding pass. All you have to do is make up some numbers and fill out with your names on the spots where there are lines! My favorite detail is adding your local airport code to the left of the airplane logo and where you will be going to the right. It really makes your “trip” feel official!

If you don’t have a printer, you can copy my hand drawn version and make your own! Feel free to follow along with the design and just have fun with it. Either way, we would love to see you tag us in your posts or share your pictures with us when you are able to do so.

The Decorations:

I made sure to decorate the house with what we had at home to make it bright and festive! While we didn’t have any traditional papel picado, we did have a colorful floral garland that brightened up the space.

If you want, you can also plan ahead and purchase decorations that make sense for your destination but you don’t need to spend your money on something you would only use once. Personally, I prefer to use my imagination of what we have at home to really make it a unique experience. No matter what, this is your “trip” so you do you! 🙂

While it wasn’t anything crazy as far as decorations go, it was just enough to make us feel as if something special. The beach chairs in the living room really helped too!

The Food:

Finally, I made sure to order from our favorite taco place and get a variety of tacos to really transport us. While we could have just ordered this for dinner, it was nice to have the entire experience to bring it all together.

If you really want to step up your game, and really immerse yourselves into the culture of your destination, you can plan a meal to cook together that is a local cuisine! At the end of the day, this is what you want to make of it so have fun on your adventure!

Oh and don’t forget the margaritas and cervezas! Enjoy your “trip”! 🙂
