How we almost DIED Climbing a Pyramid in Mexico…

Where do I even begin on our adventure in Coba…

Well, I guess I can start that it was an educational trip LOL

Needless to say, we learned a lot more than facts about the Mayan culture.  We also learned that while Courtney is terrified of heights – she hates bugs more.

We also learned that tourists scare the crap out of both of us.  Who in their right mind climbs THE TALLEST pyramid (that you are allowed to climb) in Mexico in HIGH HEELS?!?! Oh…the same people who climb pyramids in high heels also let their kids climb in flip flops and let them roam around at the top while ourselves and our Aussie friends were actually terrified the children would fall off the side.

ANYWAYS – we made it to the top.  To the top of the 120 foot pyramid.  To the top of what felt like the world… As Mufasa would say, “Simba, everything the light touches is our kingdom.”

After a long day of traveling to Coba, walking all throughout the former Mayan city and eating the best tamales I have ever had – we had made it.  We climbed up steps that were as tall as our waists.  We had climbed up steps that were made many years ago.  Finally, we had climbed up steps that would have potentially led to our tragic death…

Spoiler alert – we’re fine… but we almost died because of a BUG.

Granted, I get it.  I was technically in the bug’s space.  People aren’t normally 120 feet in the air.  People normally aren’t standing on the edge of a pyramid admiring the view.  People normally are against a railing or are strapped down if they are up that high in the air.  Trust me, I get it.

BUT Gabe and I were on our honeymoon.  We had just had an exciting day and we had just achieved what we though was impossible when we started the climb.  So we took in the view.  We snapped a few pictures and then wanted to get one of us with the steps we just climbed up in the background to show how far we had climbed.

That’s when the bug had other plans.  Legit as soon as we stepped towards the edge and said “cheese”, the flying ant/whatever bug that is flew right into my face just barely landing in my eye.

I scream and grab onto Gabe.  He holds firm and holds his balance down which keeps us from going over the edge and saves the day!

Now in all honesty, I doubt we would have actually fallen off the pyramid.  If we did fall, we would have fallen in the direction of the steps so we probably (worst case) would have only broken a few bones.  However it was terrifying!  We hear stories of “tourist fell off cliff” or “instagrammer got hurt for the gram” and even worse “blogger falls to death”.  This unfortunately can be the reality but we sh*t happens and if we didn’t climb the pyramid, we would have never gotten to the top for this view… or the story!
